“This painting features one of the French artist Édouard Vuillard’s paintings of leafy parts of Paris. It’s the kind of scene he painted extensively in the early years of the 20th century (this one is in fact from 1917-18). Vuillard had previously been a member of the art group ‘Les Nabis’ with Pierre Bonnard, Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis, a group who emphasised flat colours and patterning in their paintings. But after they split Vuillard concentrated on depicting Parisian life with its many beautiful squares and boulevards, and this painting is a great example of his work from this period.”
