Alphonse Mucha – Lygie (1901)

“This image was created for Lygie, which was the stage name of a Parisian dancer, who became famous at the Folies Bergère. For this performance on March 7, 1901, as well as many others, she did imitations of Mucha’s posters and decorative panels. Mucha and his images were so famous that this was not uncommon.

These tableaux were done with Mucha’s approval and he helped with the staging; apparently, he also gave the girl the name under which she performed, Lygie being one of his favorite characters from literature-she is the heroine of Henrik Sinkiewicz’s epic novel, Quo Vadis.”
