“At the age of seventy-six, Corot continued to paint from nature during his travels throughout France. He also produced invented studio landscapes such as this picture, in which the setting is animated by the presence of human figures.

The artist evidently identified them as Bohémiens, a French term equivalent to “bohemians” but with an additional, more specific meaning: Roma people. The transient sunset, sheltering trees, and tiny dashes of campfire invoke centuries-old notions, sometimes inaccurate, of the Roma way of life as nomadic.”
