“Madame de Pompadour is a portrait of Madame de Pompadour, commissioned by Louis XV from François Boucher (1703-1770) in 1756. The painting is housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. It has been on permanent loan from the HVB group to the museum since 1971.

The main motif is Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), Louis XV’s mistress, then aged 37, at the Palace of Versailles. She is wearing a rich, ample dress and is comfortably seated on a sofa. Around her are personal objects: books, sheet music, drawings and the national seal on the side table, the latter as a sign of political influence. The extinguished candle, the clock (in the background) and the roses on the floor, however, indicate the transience of her situation. The lower left part shows her dog “Mimi”. The roses on the floor and on the table correspond to the trimming of her dress.

The canvas represents a snapshot of her daily life. It presents her spatial environment, her luxurious lifestyle and also shows her as an educated and thoughtful woman.

Madame de Pompadour was painted by her contemporaries more than twenty times; Boucher painted her himself several times.”
