“La République is an oil painting on canvas made in 1848 by the French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme following a competition for which it was selected. The painting is in the neo-Greek style.

After the overthrow of the July Monarchy in 1848, the provisional government of the Second Republic organized a competition for an allegorical figure of the Republic. The aim of this competition is to enable the Republic to acquire a symbolic representation capable of being disseminated throughout France and to apply the ideals of egalitarianism in the arts that the revolutionary spirit of 1848 wishes to promote.

The aim of the competition was to produce a painted, sculpted figure but also a commemorative medal. The programme was published in the press and by posters on 28 March 1948. The competitors had a month to produce a sketch 65 cm high, not signed, but to be accompanied by a closed envelope containing a motto and a sign to recognize the identity of the artist. The jury is composed, among others, of Ingres, Delaroche, Delacroix … The Board selects 20 sketches out of the proposed 58. The jury’s preference goes to Hippolyte Flandrin. As for Gérôme, it came 6th in the number of elections The second part of the competition is the final table.

The cancellation of the competition was announced by the jury on 23 October 1848 without any winner being nominated.”
