Johann Bernard Klombeck – A summer’s Day Breeze (1850)

“Johann Bernhard Klombeck was born in the ducal city of Cleves on the 1st of July 1815 as the son of a local tailor. Klombeck’s first introduction to the arts was through his uncle, the painter Matthias Tinthof, who also lived and worked in Cleves. This town, situated in the Rhineland, attracted a large number of artists due to its inspiring landscape. One of these artists was the great Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, who arrived in Cleves in 1834.

It was Klombeck’s uncle who arranged an introduction between Koekkoek and his future apprentice. Not long after their meeting Klombeck started under the tutelage of Koekkoek. Just as his master, Klombeck undertook several journeys along the Rhine from his home in Cleves. These trips gave him the opportunity, while drawing and studying from nature, to get to know the landscapes and motives, which he subsequently worked out in his paintings in the studio.

As a student of Koekkoek, he was familiar with his artist’s lesson book for apprentices, Herinneringen en Mededeelingen eenen Landschapschilder, published in Amsterdam in 1841. Koekkoek had conceived his book as a description of a journey along the Rhine, whereby he took the reader as a pupil by the hand, drawing the attention towards the many specifics and characteristics of nature and the landscape. In the same year as the publication of his book, Koekkoek founded his official drawing academy ‘Zeigen Collegium’ in Cleves. It is no surprise that Klombeck was it’s first official student.

Apart from Klombeck, artists such as M.A. Koekkoek, A.J. Daiwaille, L. Hanedoes, J. Tavenraat and L.J. Kleijn were trained under the tutelage of B.C. Koekkoek. Due to the longstanding relationship between Klombeck and Koekkoek the influence of master upon pupil cannot be more apparent than when looking at the work of these two celebrated artists.”
