Jules-René Hervé – Children Playing in a Stream (1960)
“Jules René Hervé was a French painter known for his depictions of Paris and the French countryside. Undeterred by the developments of 20th-century avant-garde movements, Hervé devoted himself to mastering the techniques first established by Claude Monet. Born on April 14, 1887 in Langres, France, he moved to Paris in 1908, where studied under Fernand Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In 1910, Hervé’s work was shown in the Paris Salon where they were described as having the brilliance of a gemstone.
Serving in the French army during World War I, after returning from battle he continued his dedication to the Impressionist tradition. Hervé died on November 13, 1981 in his hometown of Langres, France. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York, among others.”
