Katsushika Hokusai – Shōki, the Demon Queller (1790)

“Shōki (鍾馗), or Zhong Kui in Chinese, is a Taoist deity from Chinese mythology who became a prominent protective spirit in Japan, revered as a “demon queller” to ward off evil and disease. Depicted as a fierce, imposing man, often in a scholar’s cap and robes, Shōki is famous for his vow to protect the emperor after dying by suicide due to being cheated out of his rightful position in the imperial examinations.

His image was widely used in paintings, sculptures, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly during Japan’s Edo period, to invoke his protective power.”
