“This painting is arguably one of Ōi’s best piece. It shows a stark contrast between light and dark and includes vibrant colours. It draws attention to the women in Japanese courtesans working in their brothel quarters but is blocked out by the poles painted in. This reflects the lives of these women as their roles were well-known by society but all else about their lives was left to the imagination. Katsushika Ōi was avant-garde and progressive for her time; illustrating a taboo topic — especially relating to women — was considered unthinkable. Because of her bold choices, we have been blessed with the ability to see and understand Japanese life from this period through a more holistic lens, as no one else would have decided to paint such obscure scenes.”
