Matsuno Chikanobu – The Third Princess and the Cat, The Tale of Genji (1700s)
“The scene of “The Third Princess and the Cat” is a significant episode from the “New Herbs I” (Wakana I) chapter of “The Tale of Genji”, a classic work of Japanese literature from the early 11th century.
In this scene, a cat belonging to the Third Princess, also known as Onna Sannomiya, escapes onto the veranda, causing a blind to be pulled open, and revealing her to Kashiwagi. This fleeting glimpse sparks Kashiwagi’s infatuation and sets the stage for later events.
Several Edo period (1615-1868) artists, including Tsukioka Settei, Katsushika Hokusai, and Matsuno Chikanobu, depicted this scene in paintings and woodblock prints.”
