“Designed for the Salon des Indépendants of 1912 where it is presented from March to May, ‘La Ville de Paris’ displays, with its monumental format and its iconographic wealth, the ambitions of Robert Delaunay. There is a view of Paris and the Eiffel Tower, recurring motifs of his work with an unpublished theme at home, that of the Three Graces.

The accelerated set-out from left to right could sum up its shift from cubism to abstraction through simultaneous contrasts. The painting accumulates the quotations and stylistic loans: to Pompeii, to the Greco, to Cézanne, to the self-portrait of Moi-self – landscape portrait (1890) of his master le Douanier Rousseau.

The gap between the modern subject of the Eiffel Tower and the classic subject of the Three Graces (which is studied in detail in a series of watercolours and oils) could suggest a manifesto in favor of a synthesis between the old and the new if the female trio did not explicitly refer to Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), notably by the primivistic character of the faces. The three parts of the composition are unified by the surface effect of the shimmering planes that remove shapes in color.”
