Theude Grönland – Winter (1872)

“Grönland studied at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen from 1837 to 1839, where he painted several portraits. In 1840 he went to Antwerp as a portrait painter, in October 1842 to Paris and then to Italy for a long time, where he realized that his true strength lay in the depiction of southern flower and fruit still lifes. In 1846 he was back in Paris, where he married Simone Olympe Maréschal, who gave birth to their son René in Eaubonne in 1849, who also became a still life painter through his father’s instruction. In addition to his son, Greenland introduced the painters Marie Remy and Anna Eichens to this genre.

The 1848 Salon de Paris honored Greenland with a first-class gold medal, and the 1855 Paris World’s Fair with a second-class gold medal. In 1858 the Copenhagen Academy accepted him as a foreign member. He repeatedly traveled to London, where he was represented in the Crystal Palace and received several commissions from Queen Victoria. From 1859 to 1868, Greenland stayed in the Barbizon artists’ colony. In 1859 their son Nel was born there and also became a painter.”
