Wang Jian – Mountain Scenery with Streams and Pavilions in the Style of Fan Kuan (1667)

“Dong Qichang’s theories about studying old masters towered over subsequent generations. Wang Jian was one of a group of painters based in the city of Taicang who studied and systematized Dong’s ideas, delving with great intensity into the technique and structure of the landscape painting tradition. In this painting, Wang explores the manner of the great Northern Song–dynasty artist Fan Kuan (active ca. 990–1030), adopting the earlier master’s jagged contour lines and signature “raindrop” texture stroke to add tactility to the rocky cliffs.”
